How to adjust slide text margins / lower third display

3/21/2022

A slide has 3 text areas:
  1. the body, which displays the song verse text (or a Bible verse),
  2. the header
  3. and the footer.
Picture
Area 4: VideoPsalm can display musical chords over the lyrics, this is a 4th text area.
This is how it looks like for a song verse:
Picture
Usually, the header of song verses is not used, and is empty. The footer is used instead.

Lower third: This is how it can look like with a green background and a relocated body area:

This is how it looks like for a Bible verse:
Picture
The header and the footer both can display text formatted according to templates/fields related to the body content, either from the song, the songbook or the Bible, etc.

Edit the footer and header content or remove-it
Show the song slide rank/number in the footer

To set the size and the location of the body area:

1. Select the “Songbooks” style level (respectively for Bibles the “Bibles” style level):
Picture
2. Press the highlighted button ("Display the resize rectangle" button):
Picture
In the popup dialog, use the mouse to resize the body, header and footer area:
Picture
Grab the corners to resize the relocation rectangle.
You can also resize it by grabbing the middle of a segment.
Before you move or resize the rectangle, make sure that you do it at the proper style level:

When you are finished with adjusting footer font attributes, don't forget to select the “Body” button again, so that changes that you do to style attributes apply to the body, which is what we do most of the time:

Notes
  1. The size and location settings, like all style settings, are applied at the currently selected level: “Song verse”, “Song”, “Songbook”, “Songbooks”, “Base”. The same is true for Bibles.
  2. The preview area instantly reflects the changes that you do to the area size and position.
However the higher style attributes are only reflected after you refresh the slide (you double-click on it).
For the “Songbooks” style level, the higher styles are “Songbook”, “Song” and “Song verse”.
Save Bible changes
By default, VideoPsalm will not save changes that you do to Bibles, to prevent unexpected changes to the Biblical text. This also applies to the changes that you do to their styles.

Enable the saving of Bible changes in the VideoPsalm options:

Hi Taneka,
To resize all song verses of a song, select the "Song" style level before adjusting the font size.
To resize all song verses of a whole songbook, select the "Songbook" style level before adjusting the font size.
etc.

In your article about animation within Powerpoint, you say "Give the focus to the presentation screen, by clicking on its icon on the taskbar with the mouse.". I don't know what this means. Can you please explain where this icon is found? Thanks.

Hi Mike,
While a PowerPoint presentation is going on, Windows displays an icon in the task bar, representing this live screen.
To give the focus to this live presentation screen, you can either:
1. Click on the toolbar icon.
2. Directly click on the live presentation screen.
The second option has the drawback that it may advance the slide show in addition to giving the focus to it.
While an application has the focus, it receives the keyboard input.

How can I change the default margins for everything instead of having to set margins for individual text and versus etc?

Hi Kyle,

VideoPsalm uses the concept of cascading style attributes, enabling you to define in a few clicks the style at any level : song verse, song, songbook, all songbooks, base.

To set the default margins for all songbooks:

1. Display a song verse in the preview area.
Any song verse will do, this is just so that you can edit the margins.

2. Click on the "Songbooks" button, located to the left of the "Bibles" button.
Alternatively, select the "Songbooks" style level in the toolbar at the top left.

From now on, all style changes will be applied to the "Songbooks" style level.

3. In the toolbar, in the "Text" tab, press the "Resize rectangle" button.

4. Adjust the margins like explained in this very article.

Does it work for you?

Hi. I'm trying to use the bilingual feature of displaying the Bible verses. An issue I'm running into is having the Biblical book display up in two languages as well so the whole congregation can follow from where the text is being read. For example, for "John 3:16" to appear next to the English translation as "Juan 3:16" appears next to the Spanish. For this, I input "[Book name] [Chapter]:[Verse]" in both the header and footer, but the references both show up as the language of the first verse displayed [I suppose position ''0"]. Is there a possible way to go about this? Thank you so much!

Actually to clarify, it's not the position ["0" vs "1"] that determines the languages of the header footer references, it's whichever Bible I have selected currently in the Bibles tab. Regardless, any help in this area will be greatly appreciated!

I need help displaying verses without the words going to the extreme left and right edges of the screen. (I don't use the program for songs.) How do I set an entire version of the Bible, i.e. NKJV, to always display verses at the margins I set? (I essentially don't want the verses to go the extreme edges as the letters are partially cut off. Thanks.

Hi Will,

To apply the margins for all Bible verses, apply the margins at the "Bibles" style level:

1. To select the "Bibles" style level, click the "Bibles" button or select this style level in the toolbar at the top-right.
From now on, all style changes will be applied to the "Bibles" style level.

2. Adjust the margins like described here:

3. Save your changes.

Does this work for you?

Hi Fabian,

By default, VideoPsalm displays a black background between songs.
If this is not what is happening, it is because the "Base" style has been modified.

To set the black background between songs, do the following:

1. Select the "Base" style level.
2. Select a black color.
3. Select the "Songbooks" style level.
4. Select a black color.
5. Save your changes.

Greetings and blessings from Canada!

I love using videopsalms! However, soon my church will start streaming their services online. I was wondering if it's possible to only show two lines (of a song) per verses at the same time. So the people can view the worship team and the lyrics at the same time...?

Thank you so much!

hi, your app is great, however for by doing now service both in church and streaming, this is not optimum to have lower third lyrics both on projector and OBS. It would be great to have the following options: possibility to get lyrics with HTTP as openlp do, this would allow OBS to get the raw text and show it as lower third independantly of what is displayed in the church main projector. Also might help to be able to define how many lines/characters we display per page without manually change each song verse to avoid too much text in lower third... otherwise please continue to make this app great!

Thank you for your feedback, much appreciated.

VideoPsalm 1.27 has following new features:

1. Ability to specify the maximum number of lines on a song slide.
Subsequent lines are placed in the following slides.

2. Ability to specify the maximum number of words on a song slide or Bible verses.
The following words are placed in the following slides.

3. Ability to specify the number of Bible verses per slide.

4. Ability to specify song verse sequences.
For example:
Long sequence: V1 C V2 C V3 C
Short sequence V1 V2 V3 C

Hello
How can I separate in two streams my lyrics : one for the church screen and one (with a different presentation) for the live streaming ?

Maybe it's not possible yet ? But it would be a very good update to make

Hi Emmanuel,

You could use VideoPsalm' stage view:
To open the stage view:
1. Click the "Message" tab.
2. Click the "Display" button in the "Stage view" group.
3. Move the stage view window to the proper place on the stage monitor, maximize it, and remove its borders through the "Stage view" settings.

Some stage view features are only available starting on version 1.27, available in a few weeks.

Hi, great programme, God bless you and the team. is it possible to save 2 copies of a given bible, each copy with different formatting. i want one version formatted to be used for lower thirds on OBS (smaller font, centered with word wrap). I also want to keep the default bible layout as this is used for full screen bible display. Many thanks

Hi Dan,

Please let me know if the solution provided in the below article can work for you:
https://myvideopsalm.weebly.com/blog/start-videopsalm-in-a-specific-document-folder

The idea is to have two instances of VideoPsalm running at the same time.

Another solution is to use the "stage view" display for OBS:

Hi Brian,

To set the song lyrics font size to 150:
1. In the top toolbar, in the "Text" tab, select the "Songbooks" style level.
2. Set the font size to "150"
From now on, all song lyrics will be displayed in 150 size, unless:
- The text si too long to hold on the screen. VideoPsalm will reduce it to fit the screen.
- Unless the font is set to a dirrerent size at a higher style level.
