VideoPsalm 1.17 is available since beginning of August 2017.

New features for VideoPsalm 1.17

Following features are announced:

New document types can be dragged into the agenda and displayed:

Web site (an internet connection is required)

and display the associated document instead of the song lyrics, while being able to find the song by its title and lyrics.

Footer and header visibility
It is now easy to select on which song slides the header and the footer will be displayed:

Precisely set presentation screen location
This can be useful when presenting on some televisions that cut-off the screen borders (for example Samsung 60" TVs).

This is useful for languages that use the bracket symbols.

The Windows 10 "out of memory" error message is potentially gone
Your feedback is required here because we are not able to reproduce the problem.
Possibility to deactivate the text shadow rendering in the settings.
This could help Windows 10 PCs with the "out of memory" error message.

Windows file association

Import a VideoPsalm Bible or a songbook by double-clicking onto it from the Windows file explorer.
Double-clicking an agenda opens it in VideoPsalm.

The TLB is in the list of Bibles to add in the VideoPsalm online library, however I don't know when it will be available.

Is the TLB very different to the NTL2007, which is available there?.

Well, I'm excited. A lot of changes. I wonder if the digital clock can pe projected on top, midden or bottom? And if you want to project a scripture. Is it verse by verse? Or can you project 2 or more verses at once.

The digital clock is vertically centered, but it is not difficult to add this feature I guess.

As for the Bible verses, the feature that you mention is still in the Todo list, sorry. I just added it again, to add weight to it.

After the church service today I've want to install the new version. Panda virusscanner says that it is a virus and that I'm not allowed to install it. Even when I tried with administration rights I've received the same message. When shutting down Panda, then I can install it. Of course I'm curious about the digital clock and saw that the translation was in French instead of Dutch. Even the language was Dutch in version 1.16. I think that not everything has translated yet. I have to test the rest at home, but further it looks great.

Hi Jan,

t seems that your antivirus program is preventing you from using your PC.
Disabling or uninstalling the antivirus solved problem for the other people.

VideoPsalm recommends the "Microsoft Windows Defender" antivirus:
It is non-intrusive, Microsoft branded, and already available for free on your PC.

To use Microsoft Windows Defender:
- Uninstall your actual antivirus. A PC reboot is possibly required to get totally rid of the antivirus.
- In a few clicks, activate Windows Defender, in the Control Panel. No PC reboot is required.

Some clock messages about the clock were available in Dutch in VideoPsalm 1.16, but could not be kept for VideoPsalm 1.17 for some reason.

That's right. If you disabled your antivirusprogram, than you can install it. After installing videopsalm I able my antivirusprogram and you can use VIdeopsalm..

In the first table (text) you can change the font and size. But I miss the option for mouse to minimize or maximize this. Now I have to input the fontsize.

When I want to show two translation of a Bible (f.i. KJV and NIV) I see only the first bibletext with translation and not the second one. So I see: KJV and I want to see: KJV
In the beginning..... In the beginning
. .
. NIV
In the beginning.... In the beginning

And I can see which verse I'm projecting. In this case Genesis 1:1.
But is also posible if I want to show a part of the text. So you see: Genesis 1:1 (Genesis 1:1-12). The Genesis 1:1-12 is what I have to show on screen or projector.

Further. I use Dutch language. But, by Message section or label I see french translation. Message has to be Bericht, Options = Opties, Horloge = Klok, Afficher = Tonen, The same with the last option: changes. The forth option says: Suprimer la Bible = Verwijder Bijbel. Unfortunately I can't find it in the dutch translation. So hereby.

Hi Jan,

Thank you for your feedback about bilingual Bible display.
This bug is already in the list of things to correct.

VideoPsalm 1.18 has more texts than version 1.16, and the new texts are not translated into Dutch at the moment.
This is why these new texts/functions appear in French at the moment. Hopefully this will be fixed in VideoPsalm 1.19.

There are some major issues with the Message Bible application that is on the program. For example, 1 Timothy 1 does not have all the scriptures.
Please fix this error and also include the Expanded and The Voice bibles.

Thank you for informing me about the seemingly missing scripture.
However, all the Bible text is there, with some Bible verses merged under the same number.
So the whole text is there and this is simply the way the "Message" Bible groups verses together.

Well I did check biblegateway and bible.com and the Message Version bible though grouped together does have the numbers beside each verse. That is not the same in VideoPsalm

Since the newest version upgrade (1.23 I believe) there is no new support/tutorial information on the latest features, namely the “stage view”. It would help greatly to have the new features AND be able to learn about them.

Praise the Lord! Good day Videopsalm team... I just downloaded the videopsalm 1.18 a couple of days now, and I'm so blessed with the program.. I've been using videopsalm for more than a year, and i am so happy with it.. This is indeed a great blessing not only for me but for every churches who used it..

One thing I just want know on how to display multiple messages in multiple lines... or is there any way to make it in this version? Somewhat like lower thirds... I've really expecting this feature in the new release...

If it is not yet available, I'll be patient in waiting for the upgrade....

Wonderful work! Thank you for all the many hours you put into this update. I really like the background image dialog being so wide!
However, I miss the buttons for moving an item in the agenda up or down, although it's nice to be able to drag them.
One thing surprises me, that I can't multi-select in the songbook to either move, copy, delete, etc.

Agenda item "Move up/down" buttons

To move items up or down in the agenda, use one of the following ways:
- Use the keyboard keys "Ctrl+Page Up" or "Ctrl+Page Down.
- Use the mouse and drag & drop the selected items at the new position.
- Right-click with the mouse and select "Move up" or "Move down".

These buttons were removed to gain some screen surface, but will be back in VideoPsalm 1.19.

Multi-select song or songbook
This is not possible the moment.
I added your suggestion to the list of things to do.

After recent updates, we were kind of skeptical since the out of memory error in Windows was overwhelming. After the first August update was announced, we ran some tests at church and it’s been three weeks and worships that we haven’t seen the error!!!!

However, I must be living in a different world, where basic operation functions are more important than being able to display a spreadsheet. I've commented on these matters in the past, on this blog, and in one email. Please may I take the opportunity of consolidating them again here, and, sadly, adding two new issues.

(4) NEW ISSUE / BUG:
The "Next" Button has lost all its extra goodness compared with Down-Arrow button.
Is it possible that the Next button's functionality has been removed and the Next button is now simply a duplicate of the Down-Arrow on the keyboard?
It would have been kind-of nice to have done it the other way around - to enhance the down-arrow to include the extra functionality of the Next button. Then PowerPoint animations could be controlled by wireless remote presenter controller.

Now even the "Next" button does not action PowerPoint animations, as it did in VideoPsalm 1.16.

Note the website says that the Next button *does* advance animations:

(5) NEW ISSUE
In the Agenda window
The re-order buttons are not present, and not able to be added as far as I can see (and customisation has been removed from the Options-Customization settings)
The context menu right-click in the Agenda window has French for the missing buttons.

(I notice that this has already been mentioned in a previous comment. Thank you for agreeing to put it back.

(6) Lastly, I retested the issue with what happens after a song with audio assigned. I posted the test results for version 1.16 at:

We are a small church with several people who plan and lead services. Most of them prefer to use the wireless controller to operate VideoPsalm as they lead the service. And preachers always want to use the wireless controller to control their PowerPoint presentations themselves. Our service leaders are not generally intensely interested in solving intricate user interface puzzles. So straightforward operation is most important.

Our priorities are:

Supporting PowerPoint animations
-------------------------------------------------
This has been removed completely from 1.18. But it is specified to be supported from the "Next" button and should also be supported from the Wireless Control. If you don't want to put this functionality in the down-arrow, then you can map it to a keyboard shortcut, then I as a "techy" can map the wireless controller to the keyboard shortcut.

Move Windows Focus to the Slides area so the down-arrow advances the slides
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is especially important for a wireless presenter. Any number of times we have had the experience of an agenda item being selected and the operator / presenter / service leader has forgotten to click back into the slide text panel, so the wireless presenter does not advance the slides.
I suggested that the B keyboard shortcut might be given this additional functionality, so that the "black" key on the wireless controller could do the move-focus function.

Re-order buttons in the Agenda window

It's embarrassing to tell my colleagues that the new version has made this harder.

A "collapse all" button for the songbooks panel.

I did mention this is the email. Double-Pressing the left arrow key (as you told me) is not intuitive nor memorable to non-techys.

Well, thank you for version 1.19, which attempts to put back the Agenda re-order arrows by putting them back in the Customization tab of the Options. This works nicely, BUT when I close VideoPsalm and open it again, the arrows have gone from the Agenda panel. When I go back to the Customization tab of the Options, the boxes for the two arrows are still checked/ticked. But the actual arrows are not shown in the agenda panel. I have to untick the boxes in the Customization tab and then tick them again to get the arrows back. I have to do this every time I use VideoPsalm 1.19.

And the bug introduced in the upgrade is not fixed where PowerPoint animations are no longer advanced by the "Next" button, as documented in http://myvideopsalm.weebly.com/blog/control-a-Powerpoint-presentation-with-animations-inside-slides.

Thank you for the prompt fix version 1.19. Pity it's still not quite right.

The agenda up/down buttons will be back for good in VideoPsalm 1.20.

At the moment, to move items up or down in the agenda, use one of the following ways:

Yes, VideoPsalm 1.20 will be a "quick bug-fix" version.
However I am not sure that it will include all the PowerPoint fixes.

Strangely enough, several people have reported that they have a better PowerPoint experience with VideoPsalm 1.20, while others (like you) are not so happy with it.

I have to confess that due to the increasing use of VideoPsalm, we have difficulties to answer all questions timely.

Is it possible to find out how the people who are achieving PowerPoint animations are doing it? That is to say those people who have found PowerPoint is improved in the latest versions. I really don't think they are actioning animations through VideoPsalm. Perhaps they are getting the better experience by using PowerPoint outside of the VideoPsalm agenda.

I am sad that VideoPsalm has removed the ability to do PowerPoint animations. This is something that many of the preachers use, and is in the PowerPoint files they give us to display for their sermons.

I am also concerned that it will have taken at least three iterations of *released* versions (17, 18, 19, 20) to actually achieve the one upgrade, with new bugs and regressions not captured during testing introduced in each iteration so far - 17, 18, 19. This makes me fear for the future of VideoPsalm. It has been an excellent application to use, and of course I am really grateful for the effort put in to produce it. But it now looks like you are finding it harder to involve good quality developers.

And I am concerned at the decision to replace the processing of the "Next" button in the application (which included PowerPoint animations) with the lower functionality of the down-arrow key (which does not support PowerPoint animations) and leaving it to the users to discover this removal of functionality. It almost seems that this was a timesaving decision taken by a developer when adding the "Previous" button without thinking about the consequences in functionality and use. If this can happen with a very basic piece of functionality, I am concerned for the future of this product. This makes me sad.

Hi John,

To play PowerPoint animations inside a slide;

a) Click the "Down" button with the mouse.
or
b) Press the "Down" keyboard key, or the "Page Down" keyboard key.

However, I understand that a) and b) do not work for you, even if you are the only person mentioning this problem.
We are investigating why it is not working for you.
Due to the fact that we fail to reproduce the problem, it is harder to fix, but I have good hope that it will be fixed eventually.
This will hopefully be fixed in 1.21.

Releases 1.18 and 1.19 have been quick-fix versions for bugs that where found in 1.17.
There weren't any bugs introduced in 1.18 and 1.19 as far as I know (except the agenda item up/down buttons).

Note that the "Next" button in 1.16 failed to play the slide animations.
It works in 1.19 (except for you).

We are aware that the PowerPoint integration is an important feature for many people, and will try to improve this matter in VideoPsalm 1.21.

On the PowerPoint Animations:

Following your statement that it is working in version 1.19, I uninstalled VideoPsalm, I renamed the VideoPsalm data folder C:\Users\Public\Documents\VideoPsalm so the new installation will create a completely new one, I ran CCleaner to clean any data left in the Registry and remove any temporary files that might make a difference.

Then I re-downloaded VideoPsalm 1.19, the current version for download, and installed it. I have a PowerPoint with a single slide with four bullet points set to appear one after the other on mouse click/Page Down/Down arrow key.

I test that in native PowerPoint. The four bullet points appear as expected: when the slide is first displayed, none of them is visible. Then for each mouse click or Page Down key or Down Arrow key, the next bullet point becomes visible, until all four are visible. Then the next click ends the presentation, with the black end-of presentation screen.

When the VideoPsalm installation ends, it starts VideoPsalm. Now I add the PowerPoint into the empty VideoPsalm agenda. I double-click the PowerPoint in the agenda. The initial display of the single slide is shown on the screen correctly, with none of the Bullets showing.

Now I click the "Down" button in the application with the mouse. You call it the "Down" button in your reply here, but I think it is the same as what you call "Next" in the blog post on controlling PowerPoints. Clicking this button in the application with the mouse immediately ends the presentation. No Bullet Points are shown.

The same occurs if the PowerPoint file is PPT or PPTX, and the same occurs with the Down/Next button in the application and with the Down Arrow key on the keyboard.

I am as certain as I can be that 1.17 replaced the version 1.16 application's action for the Down/Next button in the application with the version 1.16 application's action for the Down-Arrow Key on the keyboard, which is documented as not actioning animations.

My additional evidence for this is the detailed actions in the different conditions of playing a sound file with a song slide, which I documented in detail above. In version 1.17+ the test results for the Down/Next Button in the application are the same as for the Down-Arrow key, and most similar to the actions of the Down-Arrow key in version 1.16, whilst in version 1.16 the test results for the Down/Next Button in the application were different from the actions for the Down-Arrow key.

I have Windows 10 Home 64 bit fully up to date with updates, and Microsoft Office 2013, also up to date with its updates, and as I described above a fully fresh install of VideoPsalm 1.19.

Please tell me if I can send you any data to help you discover why my installation works differently from yours.

Oh, I forgot to say, the "Next" button in 1.16 DID action PowerPoint animations, just like your Blog Post says.

That's why we still use 1.16 on our church laptop. So we can action the animations using the "Next" button in the application.

Our church uses version 1.16. Changing pages on a song can be delayed up to four seconds. Would updating VideoPsalm help or hinder? Our computer has two cores (1.8 GHZ), L1 cache 128Kb and L2 is 2Mb. Ram is 3Gb ram with usag at 47%. Windows 10 operating system.

Hi Mark,

VideoPsalm 1.19 will certainly help (a bit).
You can revert to 1.16 anytime, if you see the need for it.

It is possible to reduce the latency:

1. By reducing the resolution of the video projection screen, for example using 800×600 instead of 1280×1024.

2. Avoid the use of text styles involving a shadow (the outline of the text does not interfere, it is the calculation of the shadow that takes most time).

3. Use less text on the slides. Prefer shorter texts by cutting the long song verses in two or more slides.
To cut a song verse in two, insert a line break at the right place.

The background images or animations (transitions) do not have much impact on the latency.

This latency requires to anticipate the display of the next slide, selecting it one second or two in advance.

If you don't mind, send me an email with an agenda (a .vpagd file) containing songs that display slowly, and I will tell you more precisely how to speed it up.

When you cut long song verses into two or more slides as mentioned above with a blank line, Videopsalm automatically adds the next verse number even if it is still the same verse. Is there a way to avoid this?

Put a non-breaking space on the blank line. And you can resize the non-breaking space by selecting it and using the larger and smaller buttons to make the blank line bigger or smaller.

Oh, perhaps you meant you wanted two slides to have the same verse number. Then when you want to 'go to' that verse, VideoPsalm has to guess which instance of that verse you mean. I don't think VP has the concept of chained or grouped slides.

Hi RD,

You are right: When you cut a long verse in two, the second part of the verse gets numbered with a higher number.

You can replace this auto-generated number manually:

1. Click on another song.

2. Click back to the song that you are editing.
VideoPsalm will now display "Verse n" on top of the verse lyrics.

3. Replace "n" with any number that you see fit.

This will work but it takes a lot of time changing all the numbers.
Others programs we have used do not automatically add numbers It is some what complicated if you copy and paste songs or import songs. The imported songs already have verse numbers. Then when you separate a long verse or chorus it adds verse numbers. You end up with something like:
V1
V2-second part of verse 1
Chorus
V3-second part of chorus
V2
V4-second part of verse 2
Chorus
V5-second part of chorus
V3
V6-second part of verse 3

If you separate a 4 line verse or chorus into parts it gets really complicated:
V1
V2-second line of verse 1
V3-third line of verse 1
V4-fourth line of verse 1
Chorus
V5-second line of chorus
V6-third line of chorus
V7-fourth line of chorus

Hi Julie,

To remove or change the slide transition:

1. Click the "Songbooks" button, located to the left of the "Bibles" button.
This selects the "Songbooks" style level, which means that all changes that you will do to styles from now on will be applied to this level.

2. In the toolbar, on top, in the "Text" tab, in the "Animation" gallery, select "No animation", or "Smooth fade".

3. Save your changes.

VideoPsalm uses the concept of cascading style attributes, enabling you to define in a few clicks any style attribute at any level : song verse, song, songbook, all songbooks, base.

Hi Nick,

It is not possible to print the chords directly from within VideoPsalm.
Instead, please use the "Songsheet Generator (SongsGen)" free app, which can print booklets with chords in the ChordPro format:

VideoPsalm also uses the ChordPro format, which makes it easy to copy/paste lyrics between VideoPsalm and "Songsheet Generator".
In VideoPsalm lyrics editor, when you copy lyrics into the Windows Clipboard, VideoPsalm includes the ChordPro chords.
This enables you to paste these lyrics into "Songsheet Generator" and print a booklet from there.

You can right-click on the name of the songbook in the Songbooks pane (bottom left) and choose "Copy a songbook summary to the Clipboard". Then you can paste it into the text editor of your choice and you have an unformatted list of the songs' titles.

VideoPsalm claim that their databases are in JSON format. This is a standard format that has many free tools available for querying and formatting JSON. The songs database includes all the information for the songs in a songbook, in the folder C:\Users\Public\Documents\VideoPsalm\SongBooks (where C is the Windows System drive in my case). Unfortunately the VideoPsalm's implementation of JSON is incorrect, so sadly you can't use any of the tools. For example, paste the JSON into https://jsonformatter.curiousconcept.com/ and it will give you a list of errors.

If the JSON was correct, then I would have written a query to give a list of song titles and authors which I could have made available to all. My original reason for looking at this was to merge CCLI reference numbers into our song database without have to type them all in, but sadly this is not possible with VideoPsalm's incorrect implementation of JSON.

First off, I love this program and thank you for it. Problem I am having is, I set my font size at say "100" which allows the congregation to be able to read the verses on the screen but (I'll use the Message bible for an example) when I put a verse up if the verse is small the font shows correctly. If the verse is long then the font automatically shrinks to fit the screen, which now makes the font way to small to be able to read. Is there a way for VideoPsalm to automatically display only what fits on the screen at 100 font and then put the rest on the next slide?

Great software.
I have 1 suggestion on the website feature.
If videopsalm can allow us to select our preferred web browser to be used to display website links on live view, it would be great. There are certain browsers out that that block adds and if video psalm not able to block them it wouldn't be nice when unwanted adds are presented on live screen.

There is a bug with both versions 1.26 and 1.27 Where once you access more than one PowerPoint files in the agenda, you cannot return to music or bible. However, if it's only one PowerPoint file, you can go back and forth, no problem.

While using a multilingual Bible, if the max number of bible verses to be displayed is set higher than 1, the main Bible shows multiple verses while the bilingual Bible only shows the first verse.
