How to assign a background to a song verse or to the whole song - Cascading styles - Part two

How to change the background of a song or a whole songbook - Cascading styles - Part one

VideoPsalm displays the text of song verses and Bible verses with their assigned style attributes.
The main style attributes are:
  • Font name
  • Font size
  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Underlined
  • Left aligned / Right aligned / Centered
  • Top / Middle / Bottom
  • Text color
  • Text outline color
  • Text outline width
  • Text shadow
  • Text animation
  • Text body size and position
  • Background color, image or video
  • Background animation
  • Header / Footer size and position
  • Header / Footer content template
  • etc. (you can see a complete list of attributes in the style explorer. See below how to open the style explorer panel).

Style attributes can be assigned at any of the following levels:
For song verses:
  • Song verse
  • Song
  • Songbook
  • Songbooks
  • Base

For Bible verses:
  • Bible verse
  • Bible chapter
  • Bible book
  • Testament
  • Bible
  • Bibles
  • Base

Each slide can get style attributes from any level, like a cascade.
If a style attribute is set at several levels, VideoPsalm considers the attribute at the highest level.
For example, if a background image is assigned at the song level and another image is assigned to the song verse level (the highest level), the image from the song verse level will be displayed.

Adjust style attributes globally for a whole song

Method a) Select the “Song” style level:
Photo

Method b) One easy way to select the “Song” style level is to click on the song:
Photo
Method c) Alternatively, if the song is in the agenda, click on it there to select the "Song" style level.

Adjust style attributes from a specific song verse

Select the “Verse” style level first:

Method a) Click on the corresponding song verse slide in the slide list:
Photo

You can see that the “Verse” style level gets selected:
Photo

You can always select a lower style level directly from the drop down menu:
Photo

To select the “Songbooks” level, click on the “Songbooks” button.
To select the “Bibles” level, click on the “Bibles” button.

Conclusion  Before you do any change to the style, first make sure that VideoPsalm is set at the right style level:
  • If you want to assign a background image to a whole song, click on the song, and then choose a background image. VideoPsalm will display every song verse with this image (except for song verses that have a more specific background).
  • If you want to assign a background image to a song verse, click on that verse, and then choose a background image. VideoPsalm will display the song verse with this background.

Remove a style attribute at some level

Sometimes, you need to remove a style attribute at some level.
For example, if you assign an image to a song but a verse already has an image assigned to it: you will need to remove this image at the verse level.

Remove all attributes at some level

To remove all attributes at some level, click on the “Brush” button at this level.
Picture

To remove all style attributes from all verses of a song, click the menu “Delete all the above styles attributes”:
Picture
If you are located at the "Song" style level, this action will remove all specific verse attributes, preserving the song attributes and the lower ones (songbook, songbooks, base).

Remove a specific style attribute at some level

To remove a specific style attribute at some level, open the style explorer with the tiny style button:
Photo

This opens the style explorer panel.
Attributes that are set at the current level are represented in bold, and have a “Brush” icon next to them:
Photo
Click on the brush to remove the attribute at this level.

The icons located to the very right tell at which level the corresponding attribute is defined.
In the above screen shot, you can see that the “Animation” and “Body rectangle” attributes are set at the “Songbooks” level. The other attributes are all set at the “Base” level, except for “Italic”.

At the moment, VideoPsalm can play wmv videos on most PCs.
Other video formats may or may not work.
For some reason, some PCs cannot play videos at all via VideoPsalm.
I have experienced failure to play videos with VideoPsalm on Windows XP and Vista PCs (black screen).
However, I had no problem on every Windows 7 and 8 PC that I have tried it on, but wmv files only.

The VideoPsalm's video rendering engine will surely be improved in a future version, but I don't know when this will happen.

Hi Tom,

The preferred video format for VideoPsalm is WMV.

VideoPsalm can display WMV videos on most PCs, notably on Windows 10 PCs.
Other formats (MP4, AVI, etc.) may or may not work, or may even bring VideoPsalm to break.

If your VideoPsalm has difficulties to display other video formats, try to use one of the following solutions:

1. Convert your videos to WMV, for example with the FreeMake Video Converter application:
http://www.freemake.com/

2. Enable the display of other video formats (MP4, AVI, etc.), by installing additional components, called "Codecs", like the ones found here:
http://www.codecguide.com/

Be careful when installing additional codecs, as some codec packs found on the internet may try to install additional software that you don't really need, and are sometimes hard to get rid of.
Note that even with installed codecs, it is not guarantied that VideoPsalm will play other video formats.

In a future version, VideoPsalm will be able to display natively other video formats, but I don't know exactly when this will be available.

Hi Bob,

To remove an image from the gallery, right-click on it and select "Delete". Alternatively, open a Windows file explorer in the VideoPsalm image folder and delete the unwanted images.
The usual VideoPsalm image folder location is as follows:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\VideoPsalm\Images

Hi Jhayarr,

Please try again after having connected loudspeakers to the PC.
There is a silly bug in VideoPsalm that prevents displaying videos when no loudspeaker is connected to the PC.
Simply make sure that some loudspeakers are connected to it.
This is not necessary for a laptop, because laptops always have loudspeakers.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

When using a background for one song, if I open any other song or bible verse, or presentation the same background keeps coming up. How do I prevent that from appearing from everything I open up

Thanks
Rita

Hi Rita,

This probably happens because the background is assigned at the "Base" level.
Usually, you will want a black background at the "Base" level.

To remove the background assigned to the "Base" level:

1. Select the "Base" level in the toolbar, in the "Text" tab, at the top left.

2. In the "Background" tab, select the "Black/None" image.

3. Save your changes.

Does this work for you?

Check the level at which you set the background (verse, song, songbook or base). I guess you set it to base. That might help.

How to a set a background and text to be the same for the Bibles that I have downloaded on in VideoPsalm?

Hi Levonia,

To assign the same background to all Bibles:

1. Click the "Bibles" button located to the right of "Songbook" button.
This will select the "Bibles" style level.
From now on, any change that you do to the style will be applied to the "Bibles" level.

2. Assign a background.

2. Save your changes.

VideoPsalm uses the concept of cascading style attributes, enabling you to define in a few clicks any style attribute at any level : song verse, song, songbook, all songbooks, base.

Please let me know if the following article explains well enough how to make best use of cascading styles:

Hi,
I've discovered the 'pin' for "Staying at the same style level" which is ideal. I change the base level background, click the pin to 'red', save and everything works... until I leave the edit mode. Even when restarting the change I've wanted is not picked up. Any ideas?
The program is worked by 10 year old pupils at my Primary School, so simplicity is required! Thanks, Paul.

Hi,

The "Pin" button was introduced in the early VideoPsalm versions.
It is not required, nor recommended, to use the "Pin" button anymore.
This button is now hidden by default, and it will be removed altogether in one of the future versions.
It is possible to achieve more without using it.

I have been using VideoPsalm for the past few years and love it, so easy to use. I have a problem now that we have gone digital and using a vision mixer that can overlay song lyrics with the music group in the background however the words do not show up in our video clips. I am using vMix to record our services. How can I fix this...have changed background to black to see the words,. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi,
The brightness adjustment function of my videopsalm is not functioning at all therefore rendering any text on video loop backgrounds illegible.
Kindly help because am always forced to use black background.
Thanks.

Hi Paul,

You are right, the brightness adjustment doesn't get applied to video background.
This is a bug in VideoPsalm 1.26, that will be corrected in a future version.

At the moment, to make sure that the text is readable on top af any background color, you can use the following text effects:
- text outline
- text shadow
Please let me know if the following article describes how to adjust the text outline and text shadow:

Starting with VideoPsalm 1.27, it is possible to easily display several Bible verses on a slide.
