Control a PowerPoint presentation with animations inside slides

Add your PowerPoint presentation to the agenda:
  • either with drag and drop from the desktop to the agenda surface:

or
Click on the "Open agenda" side button, the select "Add PowerPoints":

Controlling a PowerPoint presentation that contains slides with animation

Controlling a PowerPoint presentation that contains slides with animations requires the operator to be aware of following details:
  • Clicking on a slide thumbnail (in VideoPsalm) will display the slide at its first animation state.
  • Using the keyboard keys will move to the next or previous slide.
It will skip the eventual transitions inside of slides.
This is a problem (see solution further down, with the “Next” button).
  • With the thumbnails, it is not possible to advance to the next slide animation (it is a PowerPoint limitation).
  • If the PowerPoint presentation contains no animation inside slides, the operator can use the thumbnails and the keyboard keys to move to the next slide.
  • However, please use the “Next” button to advance to the next slide or to the next animation inside a slide:
  • The “Next” button will advance the PowerPoint presentation, either to the next animation inside a slide, or to the next slide
  • There is no “Previous” button at the moment, hopefully this will be corrected in a future version of VideoPsalm.

Alternatively, try following steps:
  1. Give the focus to the presentation screen, by clicking on its icon on the taskbar with the mouse.
Be aware that clicking on the presentation screen will advance the presentation to the next slide.
  2. Use the keyboard keys (up or down keys) to move to the next or the previous slide or slide animation.

Does this work for you?

At the church where I attend, the pastor likes to advance his sermon PowerPoint slides by himself, with the help of a remote controller.
We got him the following remote controller:
http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-K72426AM-Wireless-Presenter-Joystick/dp/B009K1PYG0
and he is seems happy of it.
Other controllers will certainly do, notably Logitech or other brands. However, I cannot recommend Targus remotes, as their buttons are sometimes clumsy.

Make sure that the presentation screen has the focus at the start of the presentation, for example by clicking on its icon in the taskbar.
Our pastor makes plenty of use of animations inside slides, and it works well.

We use PowerPoint 2013 trial. The trial period has elapsed by now, and PowerPoint works as a viewer only, but this is OK because the PC is not used to edit PowerPoints.

In case the PowerPoint presentation is off-center

To solve the PowerPoint being off-center, try following settings:

1. Make sure that the video-projection screen resolution is set to the "native" screen resolution.

2. Make sure that the Windows font size is set to "Smaller":

I have used VideoPsalm for a few years (through several upgrades. I really like the latest updated version. I used VideoPsalm for my first video presentation via the projection software and it worked well.
I did discover that the only way I could get it to recognize the video was to include it as an extra verse in the song (our case it was announcements) just before moving to the next song.
Wonderful software! I am still discovering things I can do with the software since it was last upgraded (eg. PowerPoint presentation with animation within the Power Point slide).
Keep up the great work. God Bless you!

Hi Sam, thank you for your feedback and all your encouragements!

The method that you use to display a video is OK!

However, if you need to display a video that is not already available in the VideoPsalm's video gallery, but located somewhere on your hard-drive, add it to your agenda the same way you add your PowerPoints.
Such a video will later not be available from within the video gallery, which is most likely what you expect.

Usually, videos that you import into VideoPsalm's video gallery are those that you will reuse, to be displayed under song lyrics or announcements, as video loops.

Hi,

First of all, I love the program, it truly is great. I just ran into it and have started to mess a little with it before I give it to our AV team and it's right up there with Media Shout.

One thing though, I tried to import a power point presentation and I was able to but it said I didn't have powerpoint. Now, this is true, I don't have powerpoint because we use the free open source version, LibreOffice. It saves it in the same format and everything but I guess VideoPsalm wants to see the actual powerpoint program. Is there any way this could be fixed to work with LibreOffice? We'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Abner Dominguez

Thank you also for requesting the support for LibreOffice. We have this feature in our plans and your suggestion helps us to put the right priorities.

I assume you could install a trial version of power point, it would work as display only mode when trial is out.

As an alternative, save the 'powerpoint' file as separate images (SAVE AS and select jpg) and then import these images into the agenda

Hi Gilbert,

The reason why VideoPsalm cannot control your PowerPoint is most probably because the PIA PowerPoint component is missing.

Please install the PIA component located here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3508

Kindly let me know if this solved the problem.

Thanks,

Hi Jack,

In case you did install MS Office with the "Click-To-Run" option, the only way to get VideoPsalm to control PowerPoint is to first uninstall MS Office, then reinstall it with a full setup.

Thank you for such a brilliant software tool for worship.

Unless I'm missing something, it seems Powerpoint slides are only displayed as thumbnails within the main VideoPsalm window (unlike everything else, songs, videos etc). This means that when the Powerpoint presentation includes text slides, you can't read the text from within VideoPsalm (only on the full display screen).

Is it (or could it be made in the future) possible to show thumbnails in the top panel (like song verses) and the actual powerpoint slide as displayed on the display screen in the bottom panel?

Thanks.

Hi Ross,

I understand that the thumbnails are too small to enable the reading of their text.
I added your suggestion as: "Improve text readability of PowerPoint thumbnails".
Whether this will be made available in a PowerPoint preview panel or directly on the thumbnails is opened.

I've been trying to get powerpoint working with some success. One thing I learned is that in PowerPoint > Options > Advanced > Slide Show > "End with black slide" can be unchecked to eliminate the "End of Slide show Screen" (I do not get the save prompt, so I guess that is already solved)

Hi brian,

The full PowerPoint version is required.
In particular, the PowerPoint viewer is not enough.

At the church where I attend, we use PowerPoint from MS Office 2013, as a trial. The trial period has expired, but PowerPoint can still be used, as a PowerPoint viewer. This is just fine for us.

2. With the PowerPoint file In "Edited Mode" the middle section is blank. Is this where you can make changes in with PowerPoint files? See link for image:

Hi Nat,

Thank you for your warm words.

When you add a PowerPoint presentation to a VideoPsalm agenda, VideoPsalm makes a copy of it into a temporary folder.
All changes that you later do to the original PowerPoint file are thus ignored by VideoPsalm.

To tell VideoPsalm to use the new PowerPoint document, remove the PowerPoint from the agenda then add it again from its original location.

While selecting a PowerPoint presentation, the middle section is blank. This is by design.

Hi Rafael,

Here two troubleshooting options:

1. When you install MS Office, make sure that you enable the .NET Programmability support (or how it is called now), like shown on the screenshot at this page:
http://olappivottableextend.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Office%202013%20Primary%20Interop%20Assemblies

Hello Albert,

On some PCs, there is a bug that prevents VideoPsalm to control a PowerPoint presentation that has animations inside of a slide.
A workaround is to give the focus to the PowerPoint presentation in the task-bar, with a mouse click, at the start.
Another way is to click on the "Next" button in the slide toolbar, at the right, instead of clickling on the slide to display.

Hopefully this problem will be corrected in the 1.17 version.

Thank you for reporting the problem with the PowerPoint not covering the whole screen. Hopefully this will be corrected in a future version.
At the moment, follow these steps:
1. Open the VideoPsalm options.
2. In the "PowerPoint" tab, adjust the PowerPoint margins.
3. Display a PowerPoint via VideoPsalm, and check that your adjustments are correct.
4. if the adjustments are not correct, repeat from step 2. Note that it is necessary to close the PowerPoint presentation before your new settings are taken into account.

I've been finding that when I first open VP, and run the agenda, the agenda stops running when opening the PP show. Every time thereafter, the Powerpoint starts smoothly
My sole remaining problem with Powerpoint 2016 (in VideoPsalm 1.22, using a single display) is that when the PP presentation ends, focus does not return to the agenda, I have to find the agenda presentation and click on it to continue.
My current work around is just to save the Powerpoint as a series of jpg files, and include them as a slideshow, but it there is another way, please let me know

Hi Khenno,

PowerPoint requirements
In order for VideoPsalm to control a PowerPoint presentation, Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 or higher must be installed on your PC.

Notably, VideoPsalm cannot make use of the PowerPoint Viewer.

It is advised to use a recent version of PowerPoint, even a trial version will do.

When you install Microsoft Office on the PC, make sure to select all the setup options.
Indeed, the standard options do not include the interoperability with third party software like VideoPsalm.

The MS-Office trial version will expire eventually, putting PowerPoint in a reduced functionality mode (no more edit).
You will still be able to display PowerPoint presentations with it, which is great.

Download the MS-Office 1 month trial at Microsoft from their official page, here (and don't forget to install all components):

Yes I can confirm that the trial version works. But it's not totally robust because it wants to keep encouraging you to sign up for the full version. For example, if you inadvertently open the presentation directly in PowerPoint, it often puts itself in a state where it subsequently won't work properly for PowerPoints in the VideoPsalm agenda, and you have to restart Windows for it to work.

So a related question - would it be hard to make VideoPsalm work with "PowerPoint Mobile for Windows 10"? This is free and restricted to viewing (no editing) on screens larger than 10.1 inches, and would avoid the problems with using a trial version.

Total praise and thanks for getting PowerPoint right in the 1.24 Beta. Now it really does animations completely seamlessly so that a remote 'clicker' controller away from the computer can be used right through the agenda. Better than most of the paid competition I've looked at.

Just one point about the beta which I hope will be helpful: when I installed the beta it removed the live version. This makes it very difficult to test the beta with the system that provides the live environment, having to swap between the two installations, which is very time consuming. Is it possible to have the beta with its own installation, so it is possible to have the beta and live version installed at the same time?

Actually one more point: there doesn't seem to be a particular web page where to leave comments about the beta, or even any issues that people find. In fact, will you notice this post, making a very positive comment about the new version? It would be good even for you to have a place to report findings on the beta.

So thanks again for making PowerPoint work right!

You can leave comments here on this forum, although the prefered way is via email at VideoPsalm's gmail account.
There is an email button in the VideoPsalm toolbar.

1.24 has bugs and it is not recommended to use it at church.

This is for Office 2010. Will it work with Office 2016 or is there a download for a 2016 Primary Interop version.

Great program!
It just lacks some updates like:
1. To be able to see a preview of the power point, since the more slides the smaller it is.
2. I think you should be able to create your own presentation (slides) in the program.
Thanks...

I really have had a chance to explore Videopsalm but so far so good. Only problem I've had is I have is that I have a PowerPoint that is set on a timer and cycle over until I click on the next slide. Anyway to get this to work in Videopsalm?

Just installed Videopsalm recently and really pleased with the features. We are using an older version of MS office. Was wondering if there are plans to incorporate libreoffice . LIbre is free and a church our size cannot afford updated MS.
